Working with Couples: A Psychotherapy Approach

This is a series of seminars designed for counsellors and therapists who are working with couples and wanting to develop a deeper understanding using a psychoanalytic psychotherapy framework.

The seminar series is aimed at workers who are:
currently working with couples and want to further develop their understanding by participating in a clinical reading group
working with individuals who present with couple issues
thinking of doing further training relating to couples therapy
in either public or private practise settings

When: Monday 6th February to 26th March 2012
Time: 3.00pm – 4.30pm
Where: 1st floor, Room 1, 32 Myers St, Geelong

This seminar series will be held weekly during the school term. Each session will focus on a set topic relating to couples work from a psychoanalytic psychotherapy framework and will be informed by relevant articles which will help to enlighten the discussion and clinical presentations each week. Everyone participating will be expected to present clinical material for discussion and we will be relating this back to the reading material.

Themes include:
attachment and the effects on adult life,
transference, countertransference,
the internal world and how these worlds can collide in a couple relationship
assessment of couples,
understanding violence in relationships,
how to work with conflict in the couple etc.

The objectives of the seminars include:
To provide an understanding of psychotherapy work with couples and the couple interaction
To consider the difficulties in responding to distress in such a private area of people’s lives
To explore what it means to hold or keep the couple in mind
To understand the dynamics of conscious and unconscious communications between couples and within the therapeutic framework
To be able to understand the couples transference to the therapist and how these valuable insights can inform the therapeutic work
To be able to understand the therapists countertransference to the couple and the insights that this can offer on what the couple can induce in others
