What is counselling and psychotherapy?
Counselling and psychotherapy enable people to develop a greater self awareness and to explore changes they wish to achieve in their lives. Quite often the words “counselling” and “psychotherapy” are used interchangeably, but are in fact different.
Psychotherapy on the other hand provides a way of looking at problems on a deeper level and is conducted over a longer period of time. It can include attending sessions more frequently than once a week. Psychotherapy involves conversations with a psychotherapist who is trained to help you make sense of the things that are troubling you on a deeper level. It is a process that requires you to be an active participant. Through an awareness or understanding of what is distressing and why, psychotherapy may assist you with making changes in your life. Psychotherapy offers people an opportunity to explore problems and to find a way in which to understand a wide range of feelings and experiences in their lives. People may at times find it difficult to talk at the beginning, but often this changes after a few sessions and as they become more comfortable in talking.
